Patient;

A pregnant woman who has gained more weight than she should during the period of her pregnancy comes to your office and need your advice. Her doctor told her that she has gestational diabetes, but the doctor never explained what that means nor what she should do. The doctor said that she will be developing type 2 diabetes and should prepare for that. The woman was shocked and was in tears because she did not know what to do. After talking to people, you also learn that she rarely drinks water, does not take her vitamins or minerals, eats very small meals, and purchases fast food. She rarely cooks at home, loves to eat McDonald's, such as egg McMuffin, Ice cream with extra fudge, large coke, and a side of 20 pieces of chicken nuggets. She does not understand how to eat correctly and does not know the glycemic index, glycemic load, or glycemic effect. She does not understand how her body works when she is overeating, so she asks you about how the body works in regards to blood sugar and eating. She would then like to know how the body digests the carbohydrates and what you recommend she should do? She also wants to know that based on her food choice from McDonald's, how many calories is she eating per day.
