How society uses symbols to create perspective

Problem: Erving Goffman and Emile Durkheim were the two theorists that I found relevant for today. Erving Goffman has been associated with the symbolic interaction theory. This theory is based on how society uses symbols to create perspective and communicate with each other. Where this theory is most on display is social media. Users on different social media platforms will use signs that indicate wealth or power to post pictures to communicate to others they are wealthy or in control. For example, I can take a picture on a private jet wearing gold chains and rings to try and portray an image of success. Emile Durkheim wrote a book, Suicide: A Study Sociology which focused on the common characteristics among those who have committed suicide. Unfortunately, Durkheim's study results still hold true today. For example, my department responds to several suicides that occur each year in the jurisdiction I work in. In most cases, our investigations reveal that the decedent had declined in their social integration. They would become reclusive from their friends and family prior to committing suicide, which is a direct correlation, among many others, Durkheim identifies in his book.
