How socially connected should the elderly be

Assignment Task:

Part I: Section IX Written Assignment Questions

Q1. Describe two different ways of categorizing or classifying those who have reached late adulthood (note - these should not be retired Vs not tired, but ways in which the elderly can be categorized into at least 3 different "levels"). Which is more useful? Why?

Q2. How socially connected should the elderly be? Take a position and support it with research. "Research" means reference to at least one specific study.

Q3. What do a two-year-old and an 80-year-old have in common? (multiple correct answers - just be sure that you have explained yourself - and you have stated something that is not true about every age)

Q4. What do we mean by "qualitative" Vs "quantitative" change? What qualitative changes happen in late adulthood? What quantitative changes happen in late adulthood? Give two examples of each for full credit.

Q5. If you were placing a relative into a nursing home, what features would you look for in that home - and why?

Part II: Section X Written Assignment Questions

This is an optional assignment - it is a chance to do well on a written assignment in the event that you have scores you would like to see replaced.

Please remember that all written work should be checked for spelling and grammar. Your answers should be in complete sentences and numbered. You are to use your own words. If you are quoting from the text, lecture, or a website, I have no way of knowing that you understand. Point values are as indicated. Please note that you should be using the lectures, text, and discussion as you work on these questions.

Q1. Describe the different types of care discussed in the text. Which type of care are you most likely to receive if you were to seek medical attention? Be sure to explain your answer.

Q2. Define and discuss the purpose of a living will.

Q3. What sort of funeral do you envision for yourself? What is the purpose of a funeral - and what effect, if any, would you predict when normal end-of-life traditions have to be canceled or delayed?

Q4. How do the causes of death change as we age? How do attitudes about death change across the lifespan? Are the two connected? (Note - there is no one right answer - this is really a thought question.)

Q5. What do you think - are there five universal stages of grief? Why or why not?
