How social media misuse can cause confidentiality breaches

Problem: Provide feedback, and add in text citation from one peer-reviewed scholarly journal reference in APA 7th format

Social media misuse can cause confidentiality breaches and patient harm.  Nevertheless, these posts that are uploaded can be detrimental to not only the patient but the employee/nursing student as well. As a nurse manager I would call in the employee for a meeting and discuss how the actions presented are wrong and counsel the employee if it is the first infraction. Protecting my patients under HIPAA law, I have a duty to advocate for my patients and their well-being. Educating employees on how they must exercise common sense and good judgment through modules and team morale meetings will help employees understand that material they publish online is instantly searchable, may be instantly shared, and will have a lengthy presence on the internet. While healthcare facilities recognize employees' right to engage in conversation and provide information on social media websites about everyday problems they face in addition to other personal information that may relate to their jobs and their job duties, every worker must refrain from publishing data pertaining to the environments in which they work or their jobs that could harm their hospital's image, breach its policies, or shame or offend coworkers or patients (Hale, 2021). Nurses must keep in mind that social media is basically digital. It is intended to be an open forum, and it should be carried out as such. Workers in the medical field must be especially cautious about how they communicate work-related issues online, and they must be aware of how their actions can impact their ability to create trust in a broad audience that expects reliable, high-quality service (Yoder-Wise, 2017).
