Secondary data can also be a valuable source of new ideas which develop from primary research. This kind of data helps to define problems and formulate hypotheses. It usually provides a better understanding of the problem. This data is of use in the collection of primary data. To do this you examine questionnaires and techniques, it can also suggest better methods. secondary data can help define the population, and define the areas of primary research. This data can be used to reference against the validity or accuracy of primary data. The benefit to secondary research is to save cost and time by extracting the data and reporting the information found. It is a lot cheaper that pulling primary data due to the cost of collection of data. Resource to secondary data is usually the only information able to get for research projects. Historical data is always secondary as you cannot conduct primary research in the past. Secondary data is mostly more accurate than primary data due to the data being pulled from governmental sources, trade associations, for general business resources.
