How scientific ideas can reflect larger social themes

Problem

In this module we see several examples of how scientific ideas can reflect larger social themes. For instance, in chapter seven, we learn about the work of Donald Mackenzie, who argues that key mathematical and statistical ideas developed in nineteenth century Britain were inspired by popular ideas about eugenics and population control. In chapter eight, we learn about Sarah Hrdy's work on the myth of the coy female, which was inspired, in part, by nineteenth century ideas about human sexual behavior.

For this problem, come up with some scientific idea, past or present, and argue that the idea reflects or is inspired by larger social and popular themes. Be sure to explain the idea and the larger themes in sufficient detail to support your argument.
