How poverty is measured and how means tests work

Assignment Task:

To prepare:

1. Review the Learning Resources on how poverty is measured and how means tests work.

2. Acquire an application for a public assistance program.

3. You can do this by visiting an agency or government office in your area that offers public assistance, or by searching online through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

4. Fill out the application as if you were requesting assistance. (Note: Do not actually submit the application.)

Answer the following prompts:

1. Summarize the benefits of the public assistance program for which you acquired an application.

2. Describe the necessary qualifications to receive benefits, as well as any means testing.

3. Reflect on the process of visiting the site, filling out the application, and learning about the overall policy of the program.

Answer these questions:

1. Does this application and the process uphold the self-worth and dignity of the individual? If so, how; or if not, why not?

2. To what extent is the application accessible to all populations?

3. Apply concepts and material from this week's Learning Resources to inform your Assignment.
