How positive or negative stereotype affected your job

Assignment task: Please help me to respond to the two comments below.

Comment 1: Was there ever a time that a positive or negative stereotype affected your job or school performance positively or negatively?  If not, you could talk about a time another might be affected by a stereotyp and describe how.

Stereotypes can have a significant impact on an individual's life, especially in their professional career or school performance.

To answer the question if there was ever a time that a positive or negative stereotyp affected my job of school performance positively or negatively, yes there has been.   An example that I have experienced is the stereotyp that men are more skilled in a particular job or field.  I have seen this in a position that I held at a previous job.  Where I worked, at a grocery store, I questioned to my manager why all the "stockers", the employees who stock the shelves are men.  He replied that it requires a strong individual to lift heavy products to put on the shelf.  I replied with "I am strong and I could do it just as well as anyone else could."  This is a perfect example of a stereotyp because my manager just assumed this role is for men and not for women.  Additionally, this could be affecting to one's job because it could make the individual, me in this case, think about the job and the role in a different way.  Although it did not happen to me, employees could be turned off by the response and simply quit because of it.  Therefore, it is important to be careful when speaking about controversial topics.

Overall, stereotypes can influence an individual and create both challenges and opportunities for individuals in both the workplace and throughout education.  Although stereotypes exist, it is important to be aware of them.

Comment 2: Was there ever a time that a positive or negative stereotype affected your job or school performance positively or negatively?  If not, you could talk about a time another might be affected by a stereotyp and describe how.

There was a time in school when I experienced an individual positive stereotyp. Members of my family attended the same high school as me and they were all very smart. When I got to high school, I had some of the teachers my siblings and cousins had. The teachers recognized me and knew of the relationship. My teachers assumed that I was going to be as smart as my family members. This made me self-conscious about my performance and constantly worrying that it wouldn't be on par with the performance of the rest of my family which led me to perform more negatively than if I wasn't given that stereotyp.
