Assignment task:
After reading ch4 Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class by By: Joseph F. Healey; Andi Stepnick. And the supplemental reading (Washington Post: A disturbing new report on how poorly schools teach American slavery), respond to the following.
1) The report from the Washington Post identified key issues in how slavery is presented/discussed/taught in American schools, and presented seven key problems with the way American slavery is taught. Describe ONE of the seven problems; if you can recall, make connections to your own schooling experiences (middle school, high school) about US slavery.
2) The article ends with: "The report says that none addresses how the ideology of white supremacy rose to justify the institution of slavery and most fail to lay out meaningful requirements for learning about slavery, about the lives of the millions of enslaved people, or about how their labor was essential to the American economy." Describe details/examples from ch4 that address these gaps.
