In this module, we learned about how pollutants and contaminants impact the environment and the overall health of a community. It is important to focus on a community's environmental resources to determine the population's outlook on health. A specific area where soil has been polluted is in New York City. New York City is a very populated urban region filled with industrialization and residential housing. In urban areas, it is common to find lead contamination, because of sources including "...gasoline, paint, waste incineration, and industrial and manufacturing uses" (Castro et al., 2020)
Most pollutants in the soil such as lead are present in New York City soil because over time the city has become populated and industrialized with more human activities increasing. These activities such as construction, manufacturing goods, driving cars, and spraying pesticides all affect the soil and its composition over time (New York City Health, 2024). Other chemicals such as "polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)", are pesticides and metals such as arsenic and lead that are common in New York's soil and can pose many health threats to individuals (NYC Health, 2024)
One possible health solution is to address pollutants in New York City's land by soil initiatives. Lead and arsenic can pose health risks to the community with parks, playgrounds, etc. To help decrease potential health risks, the city should provide ways to remove polluted soil and replace it with clean, unexposed soil. Another possible solution to help the environmental resource of soil in New York City would be to clean up the environment and other contaminated sites. Cleaning up the environment will help replace unnecessary structures with gardens, more parks, and other helpful ways to decrease health concerns in the soil of New York City. Need Assignment Help?
