Assignment task: The counseling profession has expanded so that counselors can use their skills in different settings. The scripture, 1 Corinthians 12:5-6 -NIV states, "There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." Some of the various settings are a private practice, schools, community mental health centers, churches, and hospitals are just a few. There are counseling settings that are not a fit for every counselor. God will guide us to the place to use our skills. In the scripture above, we are to trust God with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding but allow God to direct us to the right place. There is a possible ethical dilemma with each setting that can occur based on the setting. For example, a counselor providing counseling services in their church can become awkward and test several codes of ethics, such as dual relationships. It is important to seek supervision and be informed of potential code of ethics violations in that setting.
Private practice does not have the organizational structure of management and company policies to follow, such as community mental health settings. However, the counselor must adhere to the ACA Code of Ethics. Private practice can be individually structured, and the counselor has a large say in running the administrative part of the practice. One of the good things about private practice, the counselor can include pro bono work to give back to the community. Any setting that a counselor feels called to with God's help will be blessed. In the scripture, Psalms 112:5-NIV, "Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice."
