Assignment task:

The purpose of this assignment is to begin engaging with the ideas of the text to explore a possible topic for the research project introduced in the Welcome module. You will try on a potential topic from the list provided in the Final Research Project and connect it to one of the chapters from Section 1: "Hongdari"(pp. 7-10); "Hongdari and Helen" (pp. 11-17); "Sweatshop" (pp. 18-27); "Labyrinth" (pp. 28-34); or "Blue Sky" (pp. 35-43).

Task:

Read the chapters in this section. You can approach the selection of the topic and chapter in one of two ways: 1) Pick a topic that most interests you from the list of possible research topics (list provided below) and find a chapter from Section 1 that connects to the theme you have chosen OR 2) Pick your favorite chapter and then find a theme from the list to connect it to. You can return to the chapter you chose for the first reading response for deeper learning or pick a new chapter to examine. Then, answer two of the following questions:

In what ways does the chapter connect to the topic?

How does the writer convey the topic in the chapter? How does it provide insight into this topic?  What does the reader learn about this topic from the chapter? What, if anything, does the chapter add to your existing knowledge of the topic?

Find a golden line in the chapter that connects to the topic and explain its significance in the story. Use quotation marks and identify the page number for the quote the quote you have chosen.

What connections can you make to other texts, ideas, or current events on the topic?
