Problem
Those who have transcendent experiences often experience a loss of self and a felt experience of being a part of something much larger than themselves. In peak or flow experiences, there is usually a loss of the sense of self for a period of time and a complete immersion in one's activities. In very extreme forms peak experiences may be destabilizing when people have an altered state of consciousness that disrupts their usual functioning, possible resulting in loss of sleep, visions, disorientation, existential anxiety, etc.
1) Summarize how and when these experiences occur, and why they are so desirable.
2) How might a counselor work with clients to help them integrate positive transcendent experiences?
3) How might a counselor assist a client who presents difficulty in adapting following a transcendent experience?
4) Explain how both positive and challenging aspects of these experiences provide clients with opportunities for growth and personal development.
