How lexical access proceeds during sentence comprehension

Problem

When presented with a lexical decision task immediately upon encountering the word bug in the following sentence:

For weeks after the exterminator's visit, they did not find a single bug in the apartment.

Hearers will be equally quick to recognize the words insect and spy. But when presentation of the task is delayed until the very end of this sentence, hearers will recognize the word insect much more quickly than the word spy. What do these observations show us about how lexical access proceeds during sentence comprehension?
