Problem
In order to produce a magnitude Mw = 9.5 earthquake, how large would the slip during the earthquake need to be (in meters)? Based on the map showing earthquakes and faults in California, assume that the entire San Andreas fault has a length of 1100 km. From the graph of Magnitude vs. Moment referred to in question 3 you can determine that an Mw 9.5 Earthquake releases 2 x 1023 Nm of energy.
