Problem
During the last few weeks of the semester, you will be doing a social justice organizing project. The purpose of this projects is to understand how we can resist and communicate inequalities. To prepare for this, you will begin by choosing your social justice organization.
Summary of organization and why you chose this organization during the last week of class
i. Summary of the Organization
ii. How is this organization fighting against a system of oppression (gender, race, citizenship, sexuality, etc.)? How are they doing this?
iii. How can this organization benefit from the tools we learned in this course? (Hint: Some tools you may want to think about are: intersectionality, redefining difference-Lorde, understanding historical and social contexts-Mohanty, feminism, etc.)
Write a post under a thread that I will create during the last week on class on blackboard. Tell the class about your organization, how the organization fights against a system of oppression, and how the organization can benefit from the tools we learned in class.
Summary of the organization should include what's the mission of the organization, the resources they provide (workshops, etc.), where there are located, and a brief history of the organization. You must cite at least 3 readings from the course to answer question 2 and 3 above.
A social justice organization fights against oppression and embraces values of equality. An example of this are organizations that fight to secure abortions and reproductive rights for all people, ending domestic violence, fighting against racism, and fighting against deportation. You can simply google "social justice" organizations in NY or any other location. Examples of social justice organizations: The Sex Workers Project, Madre, The Audre Lorde Project, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Organization for Women-NYC, South Queens Women's March.
