Assignment task:
For your response papers, please aim for 1-2 double-spaced pages. You can write about anything you want as they are an opportunity for you to get your thoughts out on the reading. They will be graded on effort and completion.
If you are stuck for ideas, here are some things you might do/think about:
1) Select a passage that stands out to you in the novel, copy and paste it at the beginning of the page and explain what the passage means and how it helps you understand the reading.
2.) Write about your relationship to the Anne of Green Gables book prior to starting the class. Did you read it or avoid it?
3.) Discuss why you think the book has been a beloved children's novel --beloved by both children and adults? Certainly, the ending might look different if it were written today. Does that matter?
4.) Does it make sense to wonder whether this is a feminist book or not? Does it matter?
5.) How is girlhood reflected in the book? How might the popularity of the book as a major children's novel that has survived so long shape our ideas of girlhood?
6.) What does it mean to be a girl in this book?
7.) Summarize a key part of the argument made in the article "Why Anne Makes Us Dizzy" and explain whether you agree or disagree with it, using examples from the novel.
