Problem
Mary is a fifth grade student who consistently scores below grade level on state reading assessments. Her teacher notes that Mary can quickly decode most words. On her last reading fluency assessment (ORF) she read 139 wcpm which places her on grade level. However, Mary uses a monotone voice when reading orally. She does not show any expression so the listener cannot tell if something in the text is exciting or sad. While Mary reads at an appropriate rate, she often does not pause for punctuation making it difficult to determine where one thought ends and another begins.

ii. How is difficulty with this component of fluency connected to her difficulty with comprehension? Provide a brief explanation of your reasoning.
