Problem:
In some instances minors can legally give consent, so it is important to fully inform adolescents about benefits and risks of medical procedures and decisions. Explain what the patient can expect with tests and treatments and allow time for the patient to ask questions. Texas law allows minors to consent to treatment by a licensed physician or dentist when the minor is: a) Consenting to diagnosis or treatment of an infectious, contagious or communicable disease, including sexually transmitted diseases that must be reported to DSHS. b) Consenting to examination or treatment for chemical addiction, dependency or any other condition directly related to chemical use. c) Consenting to counseling for suicide prevention; chemical addiction or dependency; or sexual, physical or emotional abuse. d) All of the above.
