The Emotional Fire Safety Plan recognizes behaviors and thoughts that show an increase in severity and risk factors. I do like that the form was based on research from others that have have been in a suicide mindset and at the top of the assessment it also relates that to the client.
On Fire Subset includes:
Shut it down: This allows a client to reset their emotions and can be effective when clients are struggling to "ground" themselves which is- an effective technique for anxiety.
No Important Decisions: This subset allows a client to reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and takes the pressure off the client to act.
Make Eye Contact: Often clients report that they have tried to reach out to others so I think the reminder of telling clients to make eye contact and ask a direct question to address their concerns.
In A Fire section allows clients to reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and can be used prior to being in an On Fire predicament. The section also reminds clients to use these techniques often when dealing with mental health. This section includes the use of breathing techniques, mindfulness, distractions as well as protective factors of established contacts of helping professionals.
I feel that this would be useful for clients to have in addition to the safety plan that is more personalized on coping strategies and references for protective factors.
