i. How has the concept of death, death acceptance, and death anxiety changed in the course of European and American history over the past millennium or so?
ii. How have these changes been reflected in literature and art? These are some of the ways that we can understand how the wealth and intellectual classes were thinking.
iii. How have common death rituals, grieving, funeral services etc. changed over the years, and what do these changes tell us about how people thought about death in various historical periods?
iv. Don't just look for slow linear changes - keep your eyes peeled for shifts that might have occurred for a period of a decade or less and then reverted back, for example times around epidemics of deadly infectious diseases.
v. Hint: The victorian period has tons of strange and creepy death related peculiarities.
