We have discussed the issue of TikTok and the U.S. government's threats to ban the mobile application in great depth. We have talked about the U.S. government's motives, who controls the networks and flows of communication, and how this connects to criticisms that globalization may just be a new version of Western cultural imperialism.
However, you are asked to look at the issue from the opposite side of the coin-China's perspective. In your analysis of the issue, please address the following four points:
i. Why has China implemented the "Golden Shield Project", colloquially known as the "Great Firewall of China"?
ii. How has their internal Internet framework impacted flows of international communication into and out of the country?
iii. If China has long wanted to maintain internal control over their media networks, why would they allow ByteDance-the tech company that owns various viral apps-to distribute TikTok to a global audience?
iv. Based on your readings, would this be considered "Globalization"? Why or why not?
