How has singlehood been socially constructed

Problem: How has singlehood been socially constructed over the past 250 years?? Consider the structural changes that have resulted in the significant increase in non-marital arrangements, i.e. from the early Colonial period to the Industrial Revolution, status changes for women in society, technological advancements, etc.  Also -- what do you think -- are permanently single people still negatively stereotyped in American society today?? Why or why not??
