Problem:
Philippine Basket Makers Project A loan fund was made available to individual women basket makers in a rural community in the Philippines. The loan allowed them to purchase materials in greater quantities at lower prices and to increase their productivity and income. Many women found that their household and farming responsibilities did not leave them enough time to increase their basket production. Others had difficulty repaying their loans because of pressure to use the money for other family needs such as food and medical expenses. Those who were able to produce more baskets still faced the problem of having to sell them to local middlemen, who would in turn sell them for a much higher price at distant markets. i.
