Problem: Edward Gray, a 67-year-old man, was brought to the Emergency Department, by his daughter, with a wound on the left lower leg. The wound occurred due to a trauma a couple of days ago. He lives alone and was unable to leave the house due to pain and decreased mobility.
Physical examination:
- Temperature 38.1oC
- BMI 28.2
- Wound on anterior left lower leg
- Surrounding skin - red and hot to touch extending circumferentially, painful to touch and oedematous
Using the above scenario complete the following two sections:
1. Explain in around seven hundred words
- How Edward's body is responding to the injury (Inflammatory response)
- Identify clinical manifestations demonstrated by Edward, and discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms that resulted in each of those clinical manifestations
- Discuss how nursing interventions, including medications, will reduce the inflammatory process and alleviate the symptoms
2. Develop a concept map demonstrating the following:
- The effect of Histamine and Arachidonic acid in developing the clinical manifestations demonstrated by Edward (do not include the effect of chemotactic factors and plasma protein systems)
- Where on this inflammatory pathway nursing care and medications will have an effect
