Classmate One (Amy):
The field of educational technology is constantly evolving due to rapid advancements in technology. The foundational components in this area support the analysis of theories such as constructivism and systems theory as the field shifts away from behaviorism. Flynt (2024) asserts, the field of technology emphasizes the connections among theory, design, and application. In addition to applications, learning and knowledge are central to the field, while change remains inevitable as technology continues to shape the learning process. The hype cycle also significantly influences future designs, refinement, adaptation, training, and connections. Careers in technology-based roles include data analysts, data engineers, software developers, cybersecurity professionals, cloud engineers, IT support specialists, systems administrators, and game developers. Software engineers are responsible for troubleshooting, designing, developing, and testing software. Meanwhile, a cybersecurity analyst at Microsoft can expect to perform tasks such as monitoring and protecting computer systems, developing and implementing solutions to issues, responding to security events, and addressing security breaches.
The definition has evolved through various theories, the hype cycle, and knowledge transfer to learners. Those seeking jobs in technology must prepare to refine their roles, understand how their audience learns, and adapt to societal changes based on needs. Additionally, researching cognitive theories and behaviorism is essential to understanding how the field has historically transformed up to the present. For example, the overall learning process of humans is evaluated and analyzed to implement the necessary learning strategies to redefine technology roles. The learner and facilitator in technology are refined as the objectives for applying qualifications to these roles have changed.
The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) is the leading professional organization in technology. As Flynt (2014) noted, the AECT continues to implement and apply design, theory, and application in the technology field while evaluating the hype cycle to inform its study. This organization facilitates learning and theory while emphasizing research, data, and improvements necessary to keep up with the ever-changing role of technology. The job roles within this organization include members who create and develop up-to-date technology and those who research and provide data to support the communication and applications of developers and facilitators in the technology fields. Necessary skills to be part of this organization include data analysis, critical thinking, trend prediction, examination of learning theories, effective communication, and leadership skills. Khan Academy founder Sal Khan began his journey in technology software from a small office aimed at supporting student learning, innovating his goals for this software (Khan Academy, 2025). He maintained high standards in his vision to provide free tools to students and teachers while emphasizing personalized math, economics, computing, and science learning. Bill and Melinda Gates, founders of Microsoft, supported and funded his mission, allowing him to hire his longtime math competitor and friend to join him as he expanded his online technology dream. Sal believes everyone has the right to a free and personalized education, allowing donors to contribute to his online platform so parents and students can continue accessing his site for free (Khan Academy, 2025). He currently offers a ChatGPT app that provides real-time feedback and interactive tutoring for students needing extra help in math or science or requiring assistance solving a given problem. Like Sal, every child and parent should have an equal opportunity to gain access to tutoring, learning, and resources to expand their knowledge, address learning gaps, and enrich foundational skills.

Classmate Two (Tamara):
Definition of Educational Technology
Educational technology refers to the exploration and moral utilization of advancing learning and improving performance by creating, applying, and administering relevant technological procedures and resources (Flynt, 2014). This definition emphasizes a focus on the field's concern with technology utilization in education as well as with the ethical mandate that accompanies its deployment.
Changes in the Definition Over Time
Educational technology, officially defined in 1963, has transgressed from focusing on controlling learning and instructional messages to emphasizing facilitating learning and extending the learning experience through technology (Flynt, 2014). Initial definitions of e-learning focused on instructional design and behavioral learning theories; however, more recent definitions include constructivist approaches, stressing learner-centered education and digital technologies. The field is moving away from simply using technology as a means of content delivery and toward an even more expansive vision of improving learning experiences.
Leading Professional Organization
The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) is the leading professional organization in the field. Through research, conferences, and publications, AECT has played a significant role in the definition and progression of educational technology (Flynt, 2014). It publishes journals, like "Educational Technology Research" and "Development and Tech Trends," which have an impact on practitioners and researchers in the discipline.
Careers in Educational Technology
Educational technology careers include instructional designers, e-learning specialists, learning experience designers, educational software developers, technology integration specialists, and online course developers. These individuals are found across all sectors K-12 and higher education, corporate learning and development, healthcare, and government (Flynt, 2014). They focus on developing instructional materials, integrating digital tools in the classroom, assessing technology in educational interventions, and researching evidence-based teaching methods.
Influential Educational Technologist
B.F. Skinner is one of the most significant personalities in educational technology, and he created programmed instruction based on his operant conditioning theory. Wanting to focus on the behavioral aspect of learning rather than the cognitive aspect, Skinner developed teaching machines, which formed the basis for modern adaptive learning systems and computer-based learning (Flynt, 2014). His pedagogical practices focused on systematic sequential learning and immediate feedback, sailing forward with the same ideas found in modern e-learning platforms and gamified learning experiences. Skinner's pervasive influence glows across contemporary instructional design principles and the application of learning analytics to tailor education to learner needs.
