How easily the mind can be tricked

Problem:

Are ghosts real? In the Week 3 Lecture you have seen how easily the mind can be tricked because of the way our many senses combine to try to make sense of the world. In one case we see how the same syllable when viewed with different facial expressions will sound different and how a person can believe an artificial limb is part of their body. These illusions have been studied by scientists to understand how the brain works. That brings us to ghosts. Some people see them as real, and some do not. Some say they have had experiences of ghosts, and others discount those.

Considering what you learned about the ability of the mind to trick us and what you read in the article by Radford (2021), create a position statement about whether ghosts exist or not and support that statement. You may not use your personal experience or the experience of others to back your position. Instead, use material from the Week 5 Lecture. When you respond to your classmates, ignore whether you agree or disagree with your classmates. (Do not write, "I agree with you" or "I don't agree with you." Points will be deducted if you violate this simple rule). Instead, consider whether the response is strong enough to support the position, and explain why you think it is or is not.
