How drugs like morphine and heroin serve the same function

Problem: I learned from the textbook that drugs like morphine and heroin serve the same function as an endorphin, a neurotransmitter that's released from our brains. Endorphins fire off a signal to the rest of our body, which leads to feelings of pain and stress relief. If humans were to take heroin or morphine, "the drug molecules might bind to the receptor sites, thus duping the receptor into reacting as if the natural neurotransmitter is present and stimulating the neuron" (Drug Use and Misuse, pg. 56). In other words, these drugs can offer us the same relief that endorphins do. The feeling that we NEED these drugs to feel relieved can in turn lead to addiction. Once we become reliant on these drugs, we lose our abilities to accurately weigh out the positive and negative effects of said drugs. They once again mess with our minds, which I classify as being a disease (as our mind deviates from its normal state). Need Assignment Help?
