Problem
Read AND Listen to "Tommy" by Kelly Ruth Winter, and answer the following questions:
i. Deconstruct the essay for the components: hook, story (how is it compelling?), characters, setting, purpose
ii. How is this story more than personal? For a personal essay to be compelling, it should have a purpose that extends beyond the telling of a personal anecdote. How might this personal story also be seen as political?
iii. How does the oral reading of the story impact the meaning? In what ways does the oral reading add to, complicate, or otherwise change your interpretations? Discuss some of the issues that the author brings up.
