Problem:
This week, we are watching a documentary film, Trouble the Water (2008), which is largely comprised of firsthand footage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. This film underscores the "unnaturalness" of this so-called natural disaster. Human decisions, both historical and contemporary, led to Katrina's heavy toll on the poorest residents of New Orleans (who are disproportionately, and not by coincidence, people of color). First, how does Trouble the Water resonate with our readings this week on environmental justice (EJ)? Use specific examples! Secondly, how does the medium of film offer something different than a news article, scholarly essay, or other written form(at)?
