Part A- Assignment: Critical Discourse Analysis
The purpose of this paper is to extend our in-class discussion about current events into a critical analysis of the discourse surrounding a chosen event. Choose one of the topics we focused on in class around which to compose a 3-4 page critical discourse analysis.
Focus your research on how the media reported on your chosen topic. Your research should focus on general news sources such as newspapers, magazine articles, broadcast news stories and editorials, but you will also want to consider blog posts and social media. You should look at multiple sources to familiarize yourself with the topic, but your essay must engage with at least five (5) sources. You should endeavor to strike a balance with these sources - between traditional and new media formats, between conservative and liberal viewpoints. In other words, look for sources that have different points of view on your topic.
After you have collected your sources, you will compose a 3-4 page essay that synthesizes and analyzes this information for your audience. Some issues to consider:
1. What are the basic facts surrounding the issue?
2. What are the different points of view surrounding the issue? Are the sources communicating from an objective or subjective viewpoint? Is the source trustworthy?
3. Who is reporting on the issue? To what extent does the writer's identity affect the message?
4. What type of language is being used" Is the language consistent, or does it differ across multiple sources?
5. How does the format of the source affect our understanding and interpretation of the issue?
6. Who is the intended audience for each of your sources?
Finally, after you've analyzed the discourse surrounding your topic, you should conclude your essay with a 1-2 sentence argument that encapsulates your own point of view on the subject.
Part B-

3- Apply your understanding on the term discourse by identifying and discussing the different discourses used to communicate about and make sense of this issue.
