Question 1: Discuss your impressions related to the formatting of this calculation. Specifically, how does the Engineer use indentations, bullets, underlines, etc. to help the reader navigate the calculation?
Question 2: Discuss the annotation/narrative aspects of this calculation. Specifically, does the Engineer solely represent the math of the calculation, or is there text to help guide the reader? Do you think that this narrative is valuable?
Question 3: Discuss any other impressions that you have of this calculation. For example, you may find positive or negative characteristics related to neatness, inclusion of units, header content, etc.
Example Calculation B provides a comprehensive calculation packet related to the design of two in-water footings supporting the Sellwood bridge. You are not expected to understand the design basis or background for these calculations, but will rather focus on the formatting and presentation of the calculations.
Question 4: Discuss your impressions of the cover sheet and table of contents of this calc package. Specifically, do you think that these pages are useful and/or well done?
Question 5: Discuss your impressions of the analysis model data. Specifically focus on the tabular data, and comment on how the data is formatted (e.g. are there header rows? are units included? are headers/footer used effectively? how is cell color used to help guide the reader? etc.).
Question 6: The design narrative and example calculation are meant to support the Excel-based calculations. Discuss why it is important to provide this design narrative and example, as opposed to just the Excel calculation.
Example Calculation C provides a comprehensive calculation packet related to the design of the large concrete beams supporting the bridge girders above each in-water pier on the Sellwood bridge. This calculation package includes many different types of information (technical drawings, analysis software input/output, Excel-based calculations, Mathcad-based calculations, and hand calculations). You are not expected to understand the design basis or background for these calculations, but will rather focus on the formatting and presentation of the calculations.
Question 7: Discuss the instances of handwritten content in this package. Specifically, are handwritten calculations out of place? should the Engineer have typed/formalizes this material? are the handwritten sections formatted/presented in a way that could be easily reviewed?
