This written assignment is a one-page report on an artist of your choice. Your report must be a FULL page with multiple paragraphs. You also need to include a one-page (minimum) color print of an artwork that you discuss in your report. You can write about artwork that you have seen at any time during THIS semester. Go to galleries, museums or experimental spaces and have fun!
Materials: Graphite pencils, computer/library research, sketchbook, printer
Instructions: Go to visit an art exhibition, gallery or museum! This assignment is a documentation of your thoughts, ideas, feelings, insights, research and analysis about the artist (or artists if it was a groups show) of your choice. Remember to include a little bit of background information about the artist(s). Describe the artwork in your report in ways that tell the reader about the formal aspects (colors, size, kind of media etc.). Also write about the content of the artwork (what the artist is communicating with their work) and what you think/feel about it. As we have done in class, give a thoughtful critique of their work (you don't have to like it! but, you'll need to write why you don't like it). Here are some things to think about when viewing artwork (don't forget to make notes in your sketchbook when viewing the artwork):
• How does the artist use the elements of art (line, value, color, shape, texture)?
• How does the artist organize the elements of art to create artwork that you respond to (positive or negative!)?
• What colors does the artist use and how do they make you feel/think?
• What is the artist communicating to YOU?
This written assignment must conform to the following criteria in order to receive credit:
- Your report MUST be typed (handwritten reports will not be read or graded) - no exceptions.
- You must use a 12pt, double-spaced format with margins that are not greater than 1".
- Include name, date, class information and give your report a title at the top.
