Problem
I'm interested in hearing what parts of your personality or worldview may be a challenge in your work with clients. One population I have found many beginning counsellors struggle with is sex workers. In 2012, it was estimated that "4.5 million people were victims of sex trafficking worldwide" (Litam, 2019, p. 396). Hotline services have also reported a 259% increase in reports per year (Litam, 2019). As counselors, we may have certain negative attitudes and misperceptions about sex workers and sex trafficking survivors. A simple change of language using the word "sex trafficked survivor" rather than "prostitute" was found to have a significant impact on counselor perception and ultimately, the progression of treatment (Litam, 2019). How do you think you would change some of your own language to overcome certain biases you might have?
