They make decisions that affect productivity, stability, and profitability of their department and the organizations they represent. Good managers are good decision makers. The following are a few common questions business managers should be able to address about decision making with respect to the planning function of management.

Leading Questions:
Leadership is unquestionably one of the top skills needed by managers. It encapsulates the ability to effectively communicate vision, motivate and empower, delegate responsibility, make tough decisions, turn vision into reality, and guide employees through change. Below are leadership related questions that might be posed to an effective company manager.
a) What specific strategies do you use to lead your team?
b) What are the key attributes of a successful leader?
c) What are some tough decision you have had to make and what factors do you consider when faced with tough decisions?
d) What methods do you utilize to resolve problems?
e) What are some of the types of projects you manage and how do you determine which colleagues/employees should have key project roles?
It's important for a manager to be productive. However, it's much more important for a manager's team to be productive. Managers are motivators. Managers must have the energy, attitude and people skills to motivate their team members to maximize productivity. The questions below can assess a manager's approach to motivating employee.
a) What does employee motivation mean to you?
b) Describe a time when you and your team were lacking enthusiasm and explain what you did to raise spirits?
c) What do you do to retain valued employees?
d) What non-monetary factors to you feel help motivate employees?
e) What kind of work culture do you think increases employee motivation level?
f) What type of incentives or rewards work best for motivating your team members?
Communication is the number one tool managers use to manage. Effective managers are effective communicators. Poor communicators make ineffective managers. The questions below are often used to assess how managers approach communication.
a. How do you communicate expectations to your employees and team members?
b. How do you communicate to an employees that he or she is not meeting expectations?
c. What types of people in your organization are difficult to persuade and how do you address that issue?
Controlling Questions:
Effective managers use information to compare actual company performance to planned goals and then make critical decisions accordingly. The questions below are often used to assess the ways that managers approach the control function of management.
a) How do you measure your company performance and success?
b) What are the mechanisms you use to address perceived challenges or concerns with performance or productivity?
c) What challenges do you face in measuring and addressing company performance?
