How disability affects the entire family system

Problem 1: Many of the ideas presented in this course (e.g. family-centered practice, supporting parents and siblings, creating partnerships) don't always happen in practice. How will you realistically work to make these things happen in your school, and encourage others to do so? In other words, we know that SPED teachers have high burn-out rates, and that not everybody works to implement these family intensive practices. How will you deal with the realities of a school, maintaining your mental and physical health, and your desire to be a family-centered practitioner?

Problem 2: What did you learn/read/do in this course that has altered your view of working with families?  Please clearly describe both the course experience and the specific change in your views.

Problem 3: As you are preparing your students for their transition, you find out that you have a student who is from a mixed-status family (some family members are documented, and others are not).  Chapters 10-12 in McGinley & Alexander (2018) discuss the transition to elementary, from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, and postschool, select one transitional level, and then using what you've learned this semester, answer the following questions: How would you work with your school to support the family? How would you work with the family to help them prepare for the transition? What key details would you need to provide to the family to help them understand and be best prepared for the transition?

Problem 4: Discuss how disability affects the entire family system, and how parents and siblings of children with disabilities might be supported? Use course resources and/or your interview for your answer.
