Problem
Author a 750 word essay that reflects on the Hirsch reading. Outline the grievances and counter positions of the main actors (students & student organizations, faculty, administration, Board of Trustees):
• What was at issue?
• How did the various actors frame the issue(s)? Succinctly describe the sequence of events that led to the collective and the collective action itself that was outlined in the case study.
• How did the Columbia University authorities respond to the collective action?
• What was at risk for the protestors? And most importantly, elaborate on the importance of the 4 social-psychological phenomena (consciousness raising; collective empowerment; polarization; collective decision-making) that Hirsch identifies as crucial to gaining and sustaining commitment from students for the high-risk collective action.
