A. Define the "merciful compromise" and "pious perjury," and explain their purpose.
B. How did strict laws against vagrancy, and removing food and wood from the woodlands and ponds, relate to wage labor? Be specific.
C. What was the English method of punishment, and how did it compare to the "French method"? Explain why crimes of forgery, "embezzlement," and political activity (forming unions, rioting, etc.) were particularly important to punish in the English way.
