Citations and Other Writing Tips
All sources must be cited. If you use a direct quotation or borrow an interpretive idea from a secondary work, you must cite it. The only exception is for well-established historical facts (i.e. common knowledge). You do not need a citation, for example, after stating that Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492. If you have any doubts, it is always better to err on the side of caution and include a citation. If you provide a full bibliographical citation in the body of the text you do not need to include a Works Cited page or Bibliography at the end of the essay. If you dont provide a full citation within the text, a Works Cited Page/Bibliography will be required.
For short papers such as this one, it is acceptable to cite in parenthetical form: (Baldwin, p. 80) or (The Fire Next Time). Alternatively, you may use footnotes or endnotes (please consult a guide if you do so or talk to me). After your first full citation, you should use a short form in subsequent footnotes or endnotes. Whichever style you pick, you should be sure to be consistent throughout the paper in the way that you cite.
