How courts still fit into a democratic framework

Question:

Why is it especially fair to question whether federal courts still fit into a "democratic framework"? Only one person is responsible for representing the whole country. Most precedent was established too long ago. Unelected officials have the power to overrule the democratic process of making legislation. The districts that courts represent have grown too large to manage effectively.
