Problem
Scenario
John and Mary have been married for 5 years and are struggling financially in minimum wage jobs. Because of Mary's history of type 1 diabetes since childhood, they had been avoiding pregnancy. Despite their best efforts, Mary became pregnant. Her health-care provider recommends that Mary terminate the pregnancy because of the near certainty that she will experience some degree of kidney failure requiring dialysis and possibly leading to death. John wants Mary to have the abortion to preserve her life. Mary wants to proceed with the pregnancy so that John will have someone to love after she dies.
Task
How could the ethical principle of beneficence be used to justify John's request?
