Assignment Problem: The code of ethics plays an important role in our self-regulated system. In the absence of registration for social work (at this point), the code of ethics is an important accountability document. It is clear that there is evidence that social workers can cause harm, and a self-regulatory system can only investigate complaints made about social workers who are members of the AASW. Of course, there are many social workers who are not members as this is a voluntary system. Having read chapter 4, you should all by now be familiar with the ongoing campaign and lobbying for registration of social work. What is your sense of how this campaign is playing out in the current context where self-regulation is seen to be more appropriate for many groups that work with people? Do you think there is good enough argument that social work should be regulated by government? Perhaps the AASW is doing a good enough job of keeping unethical social workers in line? If your phone rings tonight and someone asks you whether you think social work should be a registered profession, what would you say?
