Short Paper: China and Japan
Often when understanding culture we rely on Hofstede's measures that lead students to confuse value similarity with cultural closeness. It is important to understand that simply because cultural values are close, country relations may not be optimal. Two of the greatest Asia economies, Japan and China, are one such case. Watch the 2006 21-minute Frontline World video from PBS titled Japan and China: The Unforgotten War to better understand the historical struggles between Japan and China.
In a short paper, response the questions below:
What are the primary issues that separate China and Japan?
How has the Chinese government worked to facilitate the separation of China and Japan?
How does the saying "the winners get to write history" apply to this case?
How might these issues hinder business between Japanese and Chinese firms?
How could Chinese and Japanese firms work to overcome these issues?
