You'll read Jasmine Warga's Other Words for Home and then give a criteria-based evaluation of that text. You should build and justify two criteria--one related to poetry and the other related to realism--that are supported by the information drawn from Chapters 6 and 7 of your textbook, Charlotte Huck's Children's Literature. The authors of your textbook present a number of considerations for selecting Children's Literature for different readers and purposes. In Chapter 6, they give you a great deal of information about evaluating poetry for children and in Chapter 7, they give you a great deal of information about evaluating realist fiction for children. Re-read those sections to build objective, measurable criteria related to the educational value of the text. You should also make use of the terms from the poetry lecture to elevate your style in your post. Here's how to begin:
First, you should explicate and justify the criterion you build. How can you tell if a book meets this criterion? What does that look like when a book doesn't meet the criterion? Why is it important to select children's literature that meets the criterion you've selected?
Then, you will apply the criterion to an analysis of Warga's novel. You should paraphrase or quote portions of the novel you chose and the chapters assigned as textual evidence of how the novel-in-verse meets (or fails to meet) the criteria you've described, and then give a clear and succinct explanation of how the textual evidence proves your analytical argument.
