Review the document "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack II: Sexual Orientation." Assuming you agree that this is an effective tool for teaching others about the privilege of identifying as heterosexual in our society, as so many people have with several of Peggy McIntosh's invisible knapsack lists (not only this one), explain:
1. How/why this is an effective tool.
2. What does it do that other forms of education or training don't do?
3. Why does it take this metaphor of an invisible knapsack to help people better understand their own privilege.
4. What are other ways that we, as social workers, can help not only the general public, but even our own selves get better in touch with our privileges, and in turn, the experiences of oppression of those who don't share that privilege?
5. How can we become better role models for the general public in this way?
6. What will it take to make us raise our own consciousness and maintain a continual level of consciousness that allows us to not only remain compassionate toward others who are oppressed in ways that we are ourselves are not, but also become stronger advocates toward social change for those populations?
