Explain the specific impact parenting styles have on two issues related to child development. Examples include: obesity, resiliency, social-deviance, self-esteem, school performance, cognitive flexibility, and emotional intelligence. Provide examples from at least one outside scholarly resource in addition to your textbook.
There are four types of parenting styles that are used in the world today. The four styles are called uninvolved, permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative. Uninvolved parents are more concerned about their own personal needs and just take care of the basic needs for their child. A child that suffers with a parent like this could show a poor school performance and or might end up suffering with low self-esteem because they aren't shown enough love. Permissive parents are more concerned about being their child's friend than a parent. They would rather give into their child to avoid them becoming upset. Children of these type of parents grow up, but later in life have problem with authority. Authoritarian is the third parenting style and it demonstrates strict demands with harsh punishments. These parents' children tend to be more aggressive outside of the home and have issue socializing. (Ermisch, 2008) The last parenting style is authoritative. Authoritative parenting is style is when parents are attentive and forgiving, teach their offspring proper behavior, and have a set of rules. If a child fails to follow the rules, there is punishment. If rules are followed, there is reward or reinforcement. (Groak, 2014) My parents were these type of parents and this is how I am with my own kids.
Discuss the match or mismatch between parenting styles and their child's temperament.
Parents who are authoritative tend to have children that are calm and adaptable. Now, a parent who shows an authoritarian child be slow to warm up to others. And as for parents that are uninvolved, their children are difficult to manage and have a hard time adjusting. (Gurian)
