Problem
Which technological innovation proved most important for early-nineteenth-century economic development?
The cotton gin vastly impacted the early nineteenth century's economic development. Before the cotton gin, cotton was a huge source of revenue for America. Everyone wanted cotton for items like shirts, socks, pants, blankets, and the list continued. Behind the powerhouse of cotton industry were the enslaved people who worked on plantations. In 1793, Eli Whitney made the cotton gin which separated the sticky seeds from it. The goal was to aid in the elimination of slavery, but it had the opposite effect. This invention significantly ramped up cotton production but also increased the need for enslaved people. Despite the negative impact on enslaved people, it led to the creation of mass production.
