Problem:
The business is very small scale so the impact to the environment is very minimal. As the end product is edible, there is very little non recyclable waste - maybe just the cake board and some ribbon. The vast majority of the raw materials used in the preparation of the actual cake come in recyclable packaging, eg egg boxes/ paper wrappings or are compostable eg left over excess icing. Most of the tools used in creating the decoration are made from plastic/metal however they are purchased for long term use, eg cake tins will last a lifetime if properly looked after.
There is some electricity/gas used in the baking process and the product needs to be transported in a car due to the size and weight of the product but these issues are unavoidable unfortunately.
I could become a greener company by delivering the cakes in an electric car and this is something I will be considering for the future.
