Some theorists suggest that crime is a form of adaptive behavior, in that it is the most satisfactory way that the offender can adjust to inner conflicts that cannot otherwise be expressed. Therefore, the crime fulfills some aim or purpose, such as the need to be punished. Crime may also be an adaptation to the stresses of life, providing otherwise disenfranchised individuals with a feeling of purpose and power.
