Assignment task:
I selected the concept of bureaucracy because it is critical in public administration as explained in chapter 7 & 8 of Shafritz et al. Bureaucracy means a structured format of working implemented in order to execute government polities and public services. On this basis, bureaucracy performs the role of being the working core of the government, making sure that all policies are properly enacted and people's demands are satisfied. This concept was picked on because bureaucracy is massive but sometimes unseen and people have this wrong perception about it See, bureaucracy is slow and people only hear the negative side of it. Still, as it has been described in the readings, bureaucracy plays an important role in establishing order, enforcing laws and keeping the affairs of government running in a sequence. Chapter 7 tries to explain the fact that bureaucracy is a hierarchy organization structure while Chapter 8 shows how bureaucracy interacts with other forms of governance including democracy and accountability. When applied to this week's readings, it explains how bureaucracy enables one to find the middle ground of efficiency and responsiveness in public service. While seen as rather rigid it is imperative that bureaucracies are efficient in order that public policies achieve the aims intended whilst also being accountable.
